Apprenticeship Scheme

Investing in people for our future

George ThompsonThe Seafood Pre-Apprenticeship Pilot Programme was launched in Grimsby because there is a recognised need to address the seafood skills shortages in this region. The Humber Seafood Institute, the Grimsby Fish Merchants Association and SEAFISH collaborated with the Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education to develop and deliver this first and unique 20 week programme. The programme covers such key areas as species identification, quality assessment, dealing with customers and life skills and it was taken up by long-term unemployed people. Coldwater Seafood was delighted to assist by hosting tours of our facilities and we interviewed a number of students – two who are now Coldwater employees. We hope that this pre-apprenticeship will be offered as a full apprenticeship programme.

We are excited to have been part of the pilot scheme to prepare people for a career in the seafood industry and extremely proud that we were able to offer people employment at the end of their training.

In 2010 the Humber Seafood Institute (HSI) introduced a 20-week apprenticeship programme aimed at addressing the skills gap identified by local employers in the Industry. The scheme, which is funded by the ‘Change Programme’ a government funded initiative, aims to get the long-term unemployed back into work. Potential apprentices are referred to the scheme through the Job Centre Plus.

They are taught at the HSI’s state-of-the-art facility on the Grimsby Europarc and part of the programme is that they will be offered work placements with local fish processing companies. The programme is designed to meet the demands of working in these businesses where it is evident that there is a skills gap.

This programme is vitally important for the future of the Grimsby seafood industry. Unless we invest in the most important element – people – there won’t be a future.

One of our new employees from the programme is George Thompson, who is now employed with us as an electric jack operative.

George commenced employment with us in February through this successful training programme.

After only 2 months with us George loves how quickly his days go and how it is home time before he knows it. In the short time he has been with us he already feels that we are a good company to work for and long term he sees himself staying at Coldwater.
