Business Education PartnershipWe are delighted to have been able to offer employment to seafood apprentices through the Grimsby Institute. During their time with Coldwater Seafood they will learn a variety of key skills which will in turn add value to both themselves and our business.
We currently have three graduates on our Apprenticeship Programme who are developing their skills with our technical and engineering teams.
Fish MatchIn 2008 we hosted an open day at our new Development Centre at West Site to raise the profile of Coldwater Seafood within the local community. As part of this we invited the head teachers of four local schools and discussed the merits of running a ‘Fish Recipe’ challenge which would encourage children to cook and eat more fish. The schools quickly realised that this initiative touched on every area of the curriculum and “Fish Match” was born! The headings for our stimulus sessions were: recognising fish and understanding fishing methods; health benefits; creating recipes and cost of production; packaging and marketing. These programmes were all delivered by specialists from within our business and North East Lincolnshire Council’s Healthy Schools’ team.
In 2009 we ran this initiative with 80 ‘Year 6’ pupils from Waltham Leas Junior and Wyber’s Wood schools in Grimsby and in the following year over 100 pupils participated. ‘Before & After’ surveys demonstrate that the children have a far greater awareness of fish and are more likely to choose, eat and cook fish having learnt more about it. Not only that – every student had fun during the project!
Based upon this success we are now planning to make Fish Match a much bigger event in 2011 and reach a larger number of children.
